New Dark Ages combines jam-band fury with a mix of songwriting styles and story-telling against a diverse, driving and intense roots-rock backdrop, all questioning the increasing angst of modern life.

Singer-songwriter Roger Len Smith will tackle any subject, so for his fourth album—NEW DARK AGES--he goes to the heart of the matter by examining the war-mongering actions and tactics of America’s first government of the 21st Century, as well as the incessant greed and questionable ethics of corporate culture. Balancing humor with the reality of serious topics, Smith glides between dark and light on his new CD as he pokes fun at Willie Nelson’s recent pot bust, gets stuck in a blizzard and covers Lyle Lovett’s whimsical “If I Had A Boat.”

NEW DARK AGES is a packed, 16-track collection ranging from intense rock jams to soulful roots-rock to personal country-tinged songs and beyond. Smith showcased his 2005 album, A BETTER PLACE, with many shows and a live radio & internet broadcast from Maui, HI. NEW DARK AGES has already started making waves as one of the new songs, the moody jam-rocker, “Holding Onto My Guitar For Dear Life,” is featured on RELIX Magazine’s April/May sampler—with over 100,000 copies in circulation.

As usual, RLS employed many talented friends for NEW DARK AGES—Jennifer Stills, Warren Hood (The Waybacks), Bryan Head (Peter Case, Dead Rock West), Eric Heywood (Son Volt), Phil Cody, Sam Hendricks, Dick Ross and many more. As any listener will find, NEW DARK AGES is about more than just today’s troubled world and personal journeys, above all it’s about quality songwriting in a time of fleeting and disposable pop culture.

Smith’s songs are marked by intricate, mindful lyrics backed by meaty, modern roots-rock rhythms. Incorporating dark, provocative grooves, blues and country barnburners, funk and more. Having worked in a wide variety of facets of the entertainment industry in addition to performing—from roadie to promoter to music journalist to benefit concert producer—Smith pours his insights into a pack of musical notions, all played with stellar musicianship.

RLS has toured the U.S. and Europe many times with his and other groups, opening for The New Cars, Todd Rundgren, Warren Zevon, Tracy Chapman, Little Feat, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Barenaked Ladies, Linda Perry, The Violent Femmes, Sam Bush, Flounders Without Eyes and more.
